Top Tips for Helping Your Child with Maths

Maths is like a foreign concept to some. It’s all numbers and letters with no actual meaning. Nevertheless, your child will need it to get through school and everyday life as we need it to calculate the time and handle money, amongst many other things. If you’re in the same boat with your child and they’re not getting the hang of it, you can help using these tips from an independent school in Surrey.

Maths comes naturally to some children whilst it doesn’t for others. You will need to be patient with your child, even if that means having to explain for the 3rd and 4th time. Practice makes perfect and with some examples done together and questions to complete on their own, they will start to get the hang of things. If you feel as though this approach isn’t working, don’t be afraid to look for other resources. Children all have their own learning style. For some, textbook activities may work just fine whilst others may need something more visual like a video tutorial. You will be surprised at the free help that you can find online.

Everyday Maths

There are plenty of practical applications that we come across day to day. You can point these out to your child to help them see how important the subject is and get them to work on the problems.

A Tutor

Maths can be complex, especially as you start getting up to GCSE and A level. You may not be able to help your child as you once did, and they may need a tutor’s help. They’re qualified and understand the curriculum well enough to prepare children ahead of their exams.

We hope that this post gave you some ideas. It’s always good to also speak to your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns. They are there to help and may be able to give you advice based on their professional experience or put you in the direction of resources to help.
