Exploring STEM Subjects with Your Child

STEM is an acronym which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Children are encouraged to take up the subjects at school, and especially girls as there’s a need for women to join the traditionally male dominated fields. We rely on STEM for the betterment of society and innovation which is why there’s so much emphasis. It offers exciting opportunities and careers which are equally rewarding. If your child’s interested in STEM or you think that they could do with some help in the area, here are some tips from an upper school in London.

Science Experiments

If your child has an interest in science, it’s important that you help to nurture it. One way that you can do that is by carrying out home science experiments. They will be able to gain a practical understanding of what they’ve been taught at school, like conduction and evaporation by seeing it happen right in front of them, and they will have fun in the process.

Help with Homework

You don’t need to be a genius to help your child with their STEM learning. Sometimes all it takes is for someone to sit and listen. While they’re studying, see if they can explain concepts back to you using their textbooks as a guide. Try and identify their learning style so that you can provide them with the right tools to learn effectively. For instance, if they are a visual learner, lots of coloured paper and pens should help. If they are an auditory learner, you could help them find an audiobook.

Help of A Mentor

Children need positive role models and if you know of anyone working within STEM that’s interested in becoming a mentor, they may be able to help guide and nurture your child’s passions. They will be able to draw upon their professional, real-life experiences to get ahead and make the necessary steps to get into the field themselves.
