Sleep is an integral part of life and it is just as important as air, water, and food. Without sleep, our body functions deteriorate and metabolic activities become hindered. Hence, skipping sleep for a single day might have some adverse effect on your body. Sleep is one of those important life processes and an average healthy human needs about 7 to 9 hours of sleep a day. During this period, there are some interesting changes that happens in our body and a few of them might surprise you.

Sleep Paralysis

When you drift off to sleep, your brain sends chemicals to your body that shuts down your skeletal muscles, effectively paralysing you. This is very important as it prevents your body from acting out your dreams. But there is a medical disorder where you remain paralysed even if you aren’t asleep. This can be incredibly terrifying to the person experiencing it and this syndrome is often described as the “old hag syndrome.”

Rapid Eye Movement

Your brain actually goes through 5 stages when falling asleep. During the final stage of sleep, your eyes move back and forth at high speed, but we are unaware of it. Hence, this stage of sleep is called Rapid Eye Movement Sleep (REM sleep). During this stage, parts of the brain that affect learning is influenced. Basically what this means is the information you previously read is recalled and reinforced in the memory.

Throat Becomes Narrow

When you sleep, most muscles in your body becomes relaxed. And this includes muscles in your throat that keep your airway open. As a result, the airflow into the throat becomes obstructed and the surrounding tissues vibrate as a result. This is one of the main reasons why the characteristic snoring sound.
