What is GATE?

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an advanced level examination conducted by National Coordinating Board, Department of Education, and Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). Candidates who wish to pursue post-graduation in Technologies from Indian Institute of Technology or any other reputed college of Technology appear for GATE and get admissions depending on their score card.

GATE is considered the most difficult exam to ace.  However, the opportunities it offers are worth a fight. One must understand that it is not just about textbooks, not just about studying, but internalizing. It is not something you can study for from a distance. You must accept it, you must explore it and absorb it to understand it.

Listed below are quick facts about GATE

  • The GATE score/rank is used for admissions to postgraduate programs (ME, MTech MS, Direct Ph.D.) in institutes like IITs and IISc with financial assistance offered by MHRD.
  • GATE opens the gates for lucrative opportunities in several public-sector enterprises and research organizations.
  • Based on score achieved in GATE, students can avail abundant opportunities of campus placements with salary packages ranging from INR 6 Lac to INR 30 Lac.
  • GATE Application Form could be filled and submitted online on the official website of GATE.

OPPORTUNITIES

There are various opportunities that students can avail once they crack GATE. Even if a student does not clear GATE but manages to score good and have a score card for GATE examination, it would be very useful in getting jobs or admissions to various reputed colleges.

The opportunities that students could avail by qualifying GATE examination are listed below:

Recruitment in PSUs Many Public-Sector Undertakings (NTPC, ONGC, GAIL, PGCIL, BHEL, etc.) indicate their interest in GATE qualified candidates. It is expected that all State Level companies will GATE exam for their hiring process.
Research Institutes GATE qualified candidates in Engineering are also eligible for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) in CSIR Laboratories
Stipend in BARC Reputed Institutes like BARC also consider or specify GATE score card mandatory for the various courses offered by the institute.
Scholarships in ME/MTech To promote Master Education in India, MHRD offers scholarships to GATE qualified students to provide them financial assistance so they can easily afford their needs during their course and thesis work.
Library Funds Candidates who get admission in Universities approved by UGC and AICET will be eligible for Library Funds to accommodate their needs of Books/ Notes/ CDs during their masters in Engineering/ Technology.
Master in Technology/Engineering GATE gives an opportunity to students to earn the degree of Masters in Technology in their area of interest.
Placement Drive Companies like Google, CISCO, TATA, SKODA, MARUTI etc come for college placements. GATE qualified students get more jobs in R&D departments.
Teaching Jobs ME/ MTech Degree also provide opportunities to those wishing to apply for faculty in top educational universities.

However, a lot of students fail at qualifying the GATE exam as evident from GATE Results 2017 when only 17% students could crack GATE. The most common reason- a lot of time was spent at the coaching centers, very less time was invested in self-study! But did they give up? No! Most of them are preparing for GATE 2018.

So winding up with a simple theory that we believe in, we’d say- Do the best you can. Have a vision and put your best foot forward to it. Nothing is coincidence, nothing is an end. Engineering in your life is not a coincidence and it is not the end. You will gain many fold success and bliss.

So take pride that we chose Engineering, and of course, that Engineering chose us!
